The Rimowa Original Cabin S is the pinnacle of classy travel for me. It is an embodiment of elegance, durability, and innovation.

Ever since its launch, I have been enthralled. When I first ventured into the world of travel, suitcases weren’t readily available online.

My initiation into the journey of owning a quality piece involved a seller in Germany on eBay—those early days of travel when the mere mention of a suitcase sparked excitement.

Fast forward through the years of navigating airport terminals with my travel companion, experiencing the quirks and eccentricities that define the early days of a traveler.

And then the Rimowa Original Cabin S came into the picture—a revelation. When they unveiled Original Cabin S, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

I thought, “Finally!” This, I believed, would be my ultimate travel sidekick—not just for regular folks but for someone who appreciates the art of the journey.

Sadly, I had to sell it for a couple of reasons.

In this review, I’ll delve into the details of this suitcase, examining its design and features to determine whether it truly justifies the investment and why I had to let it go.

My initial impression of the Rimowa Original Cabin S

Without a doubt, Rimowa has nailed the aesthetics, but can its flagship product genuinely fit into an overhead bin without requiring a lot of elbow grease?

First off, it was the shiny look with those grooves that got me. The Rimowa Original Cabin S isn’t just a bag; it’s like a piece of art.

The luggage is made of premium materials and is designed to last a long time. Unmatched in terms of craftsmanship and creativity, the timeless classic is remarkably sturdy and deceptively light.

This Original Cabin suitcase is made to fit easily into most airplane overhead compartments and is large enough to hold everything you need for one to two days. It also comes with a sticker and a free leather luggage tag.

Let me break down some of the features that first struck me.

Dimensions

Its 21.7 x 15.8 x 7.9 inch (55 x 40 x 20cm) dimensions were designed with the traveler in mind.

These precisely calculated dimensions guarantee a tight fit into overhead bins on aircraft. It’s the preferred option for any trip, especially when you want to pack light but still have access to all your necessities.

Exterior

The magnesium-aluminum blend has a wonderful feel and appearance. It truly is a work of art.

In fact, it would look so great on display in my living area. Haha!! However, it is inconceivable to do that with a second cabin trolley.

Some matte area is visible at the edges, most likely from the aluminum being bent. It may easily be misinterpreted as damage of some kind. Although it did not particularly bother me, it did catch my attention upon closer inspection.

TSA combination locks

The flap back handles on the top and side of the case are conveniently silent and stay in place when carried. Flap back handles were absent from earlier models; thus, this is a significant improvement.

Instead of closing using a zipper mechanism like most cabin trolleys, both shelves close using two TSA combination locks on the side. This is a simple and hassle-free method of locking and opening the trolley, as opposed to a zipper mechanism.

The system’s ability to eliminate searching for the zipper and the necessity to zip it all the way around the case is something I find appealing. Still, the glaringly obvious keyhole in the TSA lock is confusing.

A lot of folks who aren’t familiar with the TSA system will think the trolley needs a key, which is obviously not available. Only TSA agents manning customs can unlock the case using a master key. The only secure lock to use is a combination lock.

The two shelves fit together perfectly and appear nearly airtight. The case is splashproof, thanks to the rubber insulation. But the case isn’t waterproof—it’s just splashproof.

Logo

The three polished hinges, etched with the Rimowa logo, match the exterior beautifully.

Every Rimowa case no longer has the add-a-bag holder installed. It was swapped out by a metal label bearing their emblem. Still, it seems like something is missing from this place. Although it’s not a huge deal, I believe Rimowa might make it better.

The case maker, such as Germany, was also listed in the earlier editions. German-made cases are renowned for their superior quality. This is a crucial distinction, particularly for individuals looking for the highest caliber casings.

The manufacturer’s label is only visible on the inside because it has been removed from the outside. In this manner, you may determine whether a Rimowa case was made in China or Germany. Customers may find it difficult to notice this distinction, despite its importance, because it is not visible from the outside.

RIMOWA multi-wheel system

The wheels of the Original Cabin S are likewise etched with the Rimowa emblem. It sets itself apart from other rolling bags with this fascinating characteristic. It adds a unique touch to the case and looks great.

Four double wheels and a 360° rotating mechanism make up the wheel system. This enables you to maintain the case’s upright position while steering it in any direction, even in small areas. It is simple to maneuver in elevators and hallways at airports. The wheels barely make any noise at all.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the Rimowa Original Cabin S is how maneuverable it is. Never have I owned a carry-on that moves with such ease.

Even with a completely loaded case, you can move it ahead with one finger as opposed to dragging. This, in my opinion, is where Rimowa truly distinguishes itself from rivals.

Although the additional amenities are excellent, what you really want is a carry-on that you can travel from point A to to B with the least effort.

Rimowa telescopic handle

The sturdy Rimowa Original Cabin S telescoping handle is engineered to provide smooth, stage-free adjustment for optimal comfort and maneuverability. It retracts to two distinct lengths. Its maximum extension is 44 inches (112 cm) from the floor to the handle’s top.

Interior

Now let’s talk about the interior design.

The organizing system of the Rimowa Original Cabin S is top-notch. However, what was inside was what really won my heart. The interior’s signature color is anthracite or black.

Flex divider

You may squeeze and split your clothing and travel essentials using the Flex-Divider mechanism, which functions as a type of plate.

I’m glad that my clothes don’t blow up when I open the Rimowa luggage. Apart from that, I believe it is too big for a reasonably compact suitcase. This would be a better approach to checking in luggage.

The interior’s double-sided tape mounting to the aluminum shelf is equally stunning. Until you begin tugging on the internal edges, you won’t see it.

Materials

The RIMOWA Original Cabin S is a remarkable example of workmanship and creativity, made from premium anodized aluminum that is crafted with longevity in mind.

It has a lightweight, scratch-resistant hard shell material.

Aluminum is used for the add-a-bag holder and hinge handles. The TSA has approved the combination lock, which is a stainless steel lock with an incredibly strong mechanism.

To maintain flexibility, the Flex-Divider system is constructed using elastic cords and cloth. The inside lining is made of shiny polyester.

The creative design and material choice give this case an elegant, stylish appearance.

Storage capacity

Now let’s discuss the key aspect I know you are eager to learn about.

The Rimowa Original Cabin S has a convenient storage capacity. This is more than most other carry-on bags in the same size range, such as the Rimowa Essential.

With its clever interior design, the case maximizes the amount of space that is available.

In addition to keeping everything orderly, the Flex-Divider system keeps your clothing from moving while you are traveling. Thanks to its compression technique, you can fit more stuff into the Rimowa bag.

Because of this, the Rimowa Original Cabin S is an excellent option for travelers who have limited room and like the lightest bags.

How I used the Rimowa Original Cabin S

I use the two detachable and adjustable flex-dividers in the Rimowa small original cabin carry-on to store small items like swimwear, toiletries, hair ties, and other accessories. In general, considering its relatively small size, the storage is really better than I anticipated. With just this carry-on, I’ve been able to pack for eight or ten days traveling around the globe.

It takes some pressure to close this carry-on bag when I’m packing it full. Once zipped, though, it’s ready to go. But sometimes, I love traveling light.

What I like about the Rimowa Original Original Cabin S

Traveling with my Rimowa Original Cabin S isn’t just another day; it’s like having a guaranteed win without the gamble. Let me explain why it was the best suitcase I ever owned.

  • The Rimowa Cabin S is made of polycarbonate/ aluminum (depending on the model you pick). The materials are well known for their resilience to impact and scratches and are intended to withstand the rigors of travel.
  • This carry-on does not topple over when you attach a heavy backpack, thanks to the sturdy, long-lasting polycarbonate shell.
  • Its size is perfect for short trips and fits in the majority of overhead bins.
  • It comes with a free luggage tag.
  • Its lifelong guarantee makes sure your luggage is always covered!
  • The four wheels with double swivels make moving through hotels and airports a breeze.
  • TSA-approved locks allow officers to access it for inspection without causing harm to the suitcase.

Why I sold the Rimowa Original Original Cabin S

Now, let’s get into the reason I had to let go of this treasure. It was not an easy call, trust me. But it was a choice that had to be made.

Owning an Original Cabin S by Rimowa is kind of like having a Ferrari tucked away in the garage, only hitting the road once a month.

It is a showstopper, meant to be displayed, not kept in the closet, only to be taken out occasionally. I found myself not traveling with it frequently due to some reasons we would discuss later.

So I decided that it was time for someone else to appreciate its beauty regularly.

One major factor that made me say goodbye to this iconic suitcase is because of its exclusive repair service. When it breaks, you cannot have it fixed in a regular luggage store.

Repairs are limited to Rimowa stores, showing the brand’s commitment to perfection. However, this exclusivity has some challenges.

What if I found myself in a far-off place without access to this specialized service? Convenience matters and this consideration influenced my decision.

Furthermore, the suitcase being a fancy luxury brand made me nervous. It is not discreet. I was always on high alert while traveling because I was scared it would be stolen by airport thieves or make me a target.

Despite the fact that it proclaimed my sense of style, the constant paranoia made me let go of it. A suitcase should complement your journey, not add unnecessary stress.

Similarly, there was the fear of potential damage. Travel is about freedom, not stress. I wanted a suitcase that could handle the elements and any situation confidently, not one that made me anxious.

However, even though I had to sell it, it was still the best suitcase I’ve ever owned.

Should you buy the Rimowa Original Original Cabin S?

The value of the Rimowa Original Cabin S varies depending on your needs and priorities. It is unquestionably a top-notch piece of luggage with several features intended to make traveling more pleasant and convenient.

The suitcase features several sections for organizing items and is lightweight, sturdy, and easy to maneuver. Not to mention the variety of hues that the Rimowa suitcases arrive in!

Who could resist the stunning shades of black, titanium, or silver? Not me.

On the other hand, compared to other duffel bags or carry-on luggage options on the market, the Rimowa Original Cabin S can be an expensive suitcase, costing around 700- $1200 USD from the Rimowa store.

However, this suitcase might be exactly what you’re looking for if you’re ready to shell out more money for a luxury brand.

I would argue that RIMOWA offers a really compelling lifetime guarantee, making it a great reason to buy this suitcase from them.

Takeaway: Rimowa Original Cabin S is worth the investment

For personal items, the Rimowa Original Cabin S carry-on suitcase is a great suitcase.

Its stylish design and lightweight construction made it perfect for my business travels, weekend getaways, and long vacations.
